Common Materials for Bearing Bushings and Their Properties

2025-11-28

Bushings serve as the contact area between sliding bearings and journal shafts, with their common materials and material properties directly impacting bushing performance. Based on our understanding of bushings, we share information regarding their common materials and material characteristics.

Common materials for bushings include:

1. Metallic Materials

---Bearing alloys (Babbitt, white metal) composed of tin, lead, antimony, copper, etc.; copper alloys are categorized into bronze and brass; cast iron includes gray cast iron, ductile iron, etc.

2. Powder metallurgy materials

A porous bearing material formed by pressing and sintering powders of copper, iron, graphite, and other materials.

3. Non-metallic materials

---Includes plastics, hardwoods, rubber, etc., with plastics being the most commonly used.

Bearing bushing material properties:

Friction reduction: The material exhibits a relatively low coefficient of friction.

2. Wear Resistance: A material's resistance to abrasion, typically measured by wear rate.

3. Anti-Seizing (Adhesion Resistance): The material's thermal stability and resistance to adhesion.

4. Friction Compliance: The material's ability to compensate for initial poor fit between bearing sliding surfaces through surface elastic-plastic deformation.

5. Embedding resistance: The material's capacity to accommodate embedded hard particles, thereby reducing scratching or abrasive wear on bearing sliding surfaces.

6. Running-in capability: The ability (or performance) of bearing shells and journal surfaces to form mutually matched surface profiles and roughness after short-term light-load operation.

7. Additionally, it should possess sufficient strength and corrosion resistance, along with good thermal conductivity, machinability, and cost-effectiveness.
